The spiders will catch up with him and eat him up if he is slowed down by obstacles. Red's face is turning red, and he needs some sweet, refreshing fruit to keep him going. Collect strawberries to restore his hearts and use bananas to buy power-ups that will give him a boost of speed and invincibility.
